When Merrick and Phillip White looked at the unused section of their basement, they saw potential—but not a clear plan.
They wanted the space to reflect their shared commitment to health, while also delivering fun and relaxation. But they were unsure how to seamlessly blend the two.
“We had a big, empty section of our basement with some ideas of what we wanted,” Merrick recalls. “Aptitude came in with the technology and ideas to help us solidify our vision and build the basement of our dreams.”
That vision: a multifunctional space that could support their health-conscious and fun lifestyle while welcoming guests in comfort and style.
With Aptitude Design & Build’s expertise, the once-empty basement now includes a fully equipped gym, a golf simulator, a cold plunge and sauna, a spa-like bath, and cozy guest quarters with a custom bunk room.
“The big, beautiful, spacious gym has all of the amenities that we wanted, and the bunk room and guest spaces fit seamlessly into the design and created a space that allows family and friends to visit and feel comfortable,” Merrick says. “Aptitude was easy to work with, they were attentive to details, and everything turned out better than we ever could have imagined!”
A Growing Trend in Basement Remodeling
For Aptitude president Matt Mierek, the White family’s project embodies a growing trend among homeowners: creating intentional basements that prioritize both wellness and relaxation.
“We’re seeing more people want to use their basements for a mental and physical retreat,” Mierek says. “Whether it’s a custom sauna and cold plunge or a golf simulator and bar, these spaces are about escape, rejuvenation, and enjoyment.”
These upgrades go far beyond cosmetic. They’re a response to rising stress levels, the need for at-home escape, and a renewed focus on health.
“It’s about carving out a place in your home where you can really disconnect from the world,” Mierek says. “And we’re intentional in making sure those elements work together functionally and beautifully.”
Aptitude has long mastered the art of creating spa-like bathrooms and extravagant bars, but with new amenities such as cold plunges and saunas becoming popular, the company has tasked itself with becoming experts in those areas as well.
“Prior to this project, we’d never done a cold plunge before, so we put in a lot of research on the front end to figure out what we needed to do,” Mierek says. “These aren’t your average blow-up cold plunges; we’re talking about compressors, electronics, and drainage that all goes along with it, and there’s certainly a learning curve there. It’s forced us to educate ourselves, so we’re able to carry out someone’s vision, and that only makes our capabilities that much stronger.”
