Choose your chair wisely

Don’t choose your reading chair on aesthetics alone, instead, consider how you sit when most relaxed. Do you curl up as small as possible? Do you drape your legs over the side or prop them on a pouffe?

Perhaps a rocking chair is the best choice for you. It could even be a chair that reclines. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s as comfortable and as practical as possible – then think about design. After all – an uncomfy reading nook is a pointless reading nook.

Got an unusual or awkward space in your home and don’t know how to fill it? We think a reading nook is the solution. Alcoves, bay windows and spaces under the eaves all make a great place to curl up with a book.

Your reading nook doesn’t have to solely focus on books. It should also just be a space where you can spend alone time in comfort and style – whether you pick up a book or not!

Adding in personal items such as your favourite art print or most prized houseplant can help to add personality to the space, and make it feel like it’s a place of your own.

If you live in a period property, then leaning into characterful details will help you create a cottagecore-appropriate space that fits seamlessly into your home.

One way of doing this is by making the most of natural, traditional materials and details, such as wood. Wood panelling and beams will give your reading nook a look that is both inviting and rustic.
