The most important trend when remodeling a room is being true to yourself and making the space comfortable and exactly what you love, according to Ashley Cole, co-owner of Home Design Center in Jamestown.

Cole said homeowners should just keep in mind what the functionality of the space will be. She said families spend more time at home and investing in entertainment space is still important for families because it provides comfort, relaxation and versatility for time spent indoors.

She also said what design, color, texture, decor or even home trends a customer chooses is all personal preference.

“What I think is distracting and what you think are distracting could be two different things,” she said.

A big trend in 2022 is creating a space that is entirely your own, she wrote in a document about trends.

“Instead of reaching for the popular themed products, incorporate a vintage find or family heirloom to create that unique touch,” she wrote. “Each piece within your space should be one that you love and appreciate.”

Design trends including unfinished woods, teak and other natural elements are becoming staples inside homes everywhere, she wrote. She wrote that natural tones offer a calming warmth to a home without being overbearing.

“I always mention to my clients that keeping the ‘fixed’ items of your space such as cabinets, countertops and flooring in a neutral tone you can accent with pops of colors, textures and decor,” she wrote. “These items are much easier and more cost effective to change out whenever you desire to do so.”

She wrote earth tones and browns are becoming very popular inside homes. She wrote people are striving to create a peaceful space and neutral colors provide a canvas to punctuate the space with bright or bold colors.

“Window treatments can offer a pop of color or pattern,” she wrote. “Solid panels will remain a classic, however this is an area that you can experiment and add in a new shade of color, design or texture.”

Multiple textures within a space is OK to do because it creates a space with character, depth and variation, she wrote. Popular textures that will be seen this year include window treatments and drapery, various wallpapers, soft velvets, woven furniture and arches, she wrote.

Keeping decor natural and organic while following the less-is-more approach and incorporating clean lines provides a calm, Zen-like environment for homeowners to be in, she wrote.

When a homeowner calls Home Design Center, Cole will set up a time to check out the customer’s space that will be remodeled. She said they will talk about what homeowners like or don’t like about the space and what they want and need.

“I always tell people to have a want list and a need list so then we can try to incorporate as much as possible,” she said. “I would say installation pictures, pictures you are drawn to are really helpful to help us figure out what kind of a style that you like.”

After measurements are taken, she will enter everything into a design program and draw a rendering of the original space and then do a design where she shows the customer the possibilities of the space.

Once the final rendering is complete, she works with the customer on picking out the products.

“We can do anything from the studs in, so flooring, cabinets, countertops, plumbing, light fixtures, hardware, window treatments,” she said. “Then we help the customer pick out paint.”

She said Home Design Center can line up all the contractors for a project or the business has its own install crews as well. She said customers can let Home Design Center know if they have a preferred contractor and the business will line them up to get the project completed.
